Thanks Harish, elne. I'll blame you Harish for the ensuing infamy :-)

Incidentally, I was also trying to find a relevant Hacker quote from YM/YPM to justify why ministers might end up giving interviews despite being poorly prepared or unable to handle the heat - but could find a particular one from the many. Of course, this issue permeates the whole series as to how ministers manage acts of self-delusion that makes the world seem good.

ramanand: Interesting you quote 'Yes Minister' - I hinted at something similar in my post on the interview.

There is no comparison to Arjun Singh's interview with that of Hacker. Hacker is at least constrained by a basic sense of decency. A sense of being perceived as fair, a sense of being seen as answerable, a sense of discomfit over what is palpably wrong. Arjun Singh is not the least bothered by any such sensibility. He couldnt care less for what impression he leaves with the folks who watch Karan Thapar's show. He couldnt care less for being seen as fair. He basically said that we have the power to do what we can, you can go take a hike. You cant make a comodey out of that, even a tragic one. The humor in Hacker comes from the fact that Hacker, as all politicians wants his way, but is at least mildly disconfitted by ethical considerations. The likes of Arjun Singh are beneath contempt. They have no such thing called decency. In fact, common decency is something that is so completely lacking in the Indian political arena that it is shocking. With no sense of ethics one cannot be shamed. If one cannot be shamed then one of the biggest constraints on political behavior disappears.
