What is wrong with Ram Gopal Varma?
From a Rediff interview featuring Manoj Bajpai:What do you have to say about your soured relationship with Ram Gopal Varma?Three of Manoj Bajpai's best performances came under the RGV aegis, so it is a huge pity that the two no longer work together. Bajpai has seldom since hit the heights that he should have. Reports of other RGV regulars also parting ways has therefore begged the question: why does Ram Gopal Varma end up feuding with Factory talent?
It was very little good and lots bad. And I would not want to say anything more than this.
This is assuming the tough-talking director is indeed responsible, but given the numbers involved, he must be doing something wrong. The result is that the output of the once-prolific production house is not only low, but also weak. Varma's own movies have not been anywhere near the glories of the past, and survive on mere formula: intrusive BGMs, lopsided camera angles and jump cuts.
It seems like Varma hasn't quite managed to get away with treating actors like cattle - a meat-packing Factory this is not.

though not anywhere near his past Satya, Shiva (1990, not 2006) and some amazing situational comedies in telugu, he still promises that punch with his every offering, which alas,is proved false with every viewing.
who else could have pulled off a Bhoot(2003) with nothing going for it but his muse's silly histrionics and Vishal Sinha's lenses!! and is this the guy who unlike that madras magician, has gone for fresh DOPs and editors with every single movie of his and caring two hoots for established sreerams and sivans.
yes, he seems stuck in the lopsided camera angles manipulative BGM formula of his, when he should have moved ahead saying "been there, done that"...
surprising! because he was the ONE who gave a fresh lease to Steadycam atleast in the Indian cinema and rarely have there been any movies of his where his trademark "galli steadycam chase" hasnt featured!!!
varma is still one of the few directors i reckon, who can draw in crowds with his "a ramgopal varma film" tag...
Santosh: am hoping to see some of his Telugu films someday. Currently, I'm just so disappointed. Didn't think things would be like this after that great Factory period from 2001-2004.
for starters you could try laying hands on "kshana kshanam" (1991) which was the most uncinematic fare in telugu i have seen atleast in its genre, songs and dances notwithstanding... paresh rawal in his raw undubbed voice is aha!
supposedly the inspiration behind Thiruda Thiruda (1993) where Varma joins the madras magician on the screenplay. incidentally the latter joined varma on Gaayam, his underrated gangster classic. (and people say they first joined hands for "india talkies" !!!)
if you can get the telugu nuances dont miss Gaayam boss!
