The Reloading of Sherlock Holmes
I wonder if the great Sherlock Holmes would have been as successful and as magical in the modern age. Much of the Holmes deduction, for instance, being able to tell to a T, the profession and mental state of a person based on the impressions they left on his apparel or telling exactly what kind of cigar was smoked, or marks left on the muddy ground - things that in the stale homogeneity and unimpressionable plastic would probably not record for the piercing eyes of the sleuth. Everyone wears the same kinds of clothes, some people are wearing even lesser clothes than before. Roads are tarred, and it's not easy to decipher a road from the slush in its pothole.Would the great Holmes have been equally triumphant in the modern world, where crime is more overt than ever before? Perhaps, for geniuses would know how to adjust to changing conditions. Maybe I, like the good Doctor, would have been able to spot the differences between my fellowmen, if only I observed instead of merely seeing...
