Bridge under troubled waters
The Rama Setu issue has finally found its way on to the front pages, news headlines, and its own weekend debate episodes. For many weeks, one could see non sequiturs on several online news fora, where the comments would have been randomly hijacked on to the topic. The same hordes of political spokesmen trotted out the same set of debating points. M.K.Gandhi's references to "Hey Ram" and "Ram Rajya" have been recalled. "Ram" is an integral part of India's psyche, we are told.
Surprisingly, for something that is an integral part of our psyche, we don't remember a Ram Rajya during the daily dregs of our governance. Cricket, in comparison, makes a higher rate of impact per day than the memory of Rama would. Not that poor cricket is to be blamed for the state of affairs.
So can I still ask a question on Rama under "mythology" rather than "history"? Does it matter if your icons existed or not? Can we, for instance, not follow the excellent examples of brave Harry Potter and the sharp Sherlock Holmes?
